The Kuari Pass Trek commences in the picturesque Himalayan village of Tugasi (8,038 feet), a charming settlement near Joshimath. The trail gently climbs to Gulling Top (9,514 feet), passing through more of these quaint mountain hamlets. The path continues to Khullara (11,000 feet), presenting stunning vistas of majestic peaks draped in snow.

Following the departure from Khullara, the trail climbs to Kuari Pass at 12,500 feet, crossing Khullara Top at 11,800 feet. This morning we all meet at the designated pickup location in Natraj Chowk at 0700 Hrs and proceed on our thrilling Kuari Pass expedition. We will stop en route for Breakfast (on direct payment) and continue our drive towards Joshimath along the scenic Badrinath Highway showcases the Alaknanda River flowing through rugged valleys, shaping a striking scenery. Passing through dense forests and quaint mountain villages, the route provides breathtaking vistas of the Garhwal Himalayas. With the elevation gain, the river transforms from a tranquil stream to a powerful waterfall, mirroring the wild allure of the area.

Witness Sacred Confluences – Panch Prayags

This drive takes us through the revered Panch Prayags, a series of five sacred river confluences deeply revered in Hindu mythology:

Devprayag – Where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda Rivers unite to form the holy Ganges.
Rudraprayag – A mystical site where the Mandakini and Alaknanda Rivers converge.
Karnaprayag – Where the Pindar River merges with Alaknanda.
Nandaprayag – Where the Nandakini River joins the Alaknanda.

Day 02 :

Following a morning meal in Joshimath, we set off on a picturesque journey to Tugasi village (2,450m), the launchpad for our trekking expedition. We pass through the dramatic Himalayan landscape, affording stunning vistas of the Garhwal region. As we make our way to the trailhead, the rugged roads and sweeping valley views create an exhilarating introduction to the adventure ahead.

After arriving at Tugasi, the journey commences with a gentle but consistent climb, traversing charming mountain communities and stepped agricultural fields, a defining characteristic of this area. While the path is not heavily wooded during this phase, the expansive mountain views compensate for it. Down below, the Dhauli-Ganga River sparkles in the distance, and with keen observation, you may see the Vishnugad-Tapovan Hydroelectric Power Station.

As we ascend, the landscape increases sharply, changing from farmland to challenging mountain paths. The majestic view of Dronagiri Peak becomes visible in the distance, enhancing the sense of wonder and magnificence during the trip. The last part of the journey reveals a picturesque grassy area, indicating our reaching Gulling Top (2,900m), where we will set up camp for the night.

Gulling Campsite – A Serene Retreat in the Himalayas

Surrounded by dense oak forests, the Gulling campsite provides a breathtaking backdrop for an overnight stay. The unique beauty of the majestic Himalayan peaks, standing tall against the horizon, is truly awe-inspiring.

Day 03 :

Gulling Campsite (9400 ft.) to Khullara Forest Campsite (11000 ft.) by Trek

Following an early morning meal at Gulling Top, we set off on a gentle climb towards Khullara. The path meanders through a captivating forest trail bordered by oak, rhododendron, and walnut trees, enveloping you in the tranquil splendor of the Garhwal Himalayas. The journey commences on a muddy, secluded path, sheltered under a thick forest cover, providing a calm yet energizing start to the day. Although the majesty of the towering mountains is not immediately revealed, the colorful plant life, crisp mountain breeze, and occasional snow patches create a charming and pleasurable trek.

This scenic trail boasts numerous water sources and tight bends, with steep gorges along one edge, injecting an element of thrill and excitement. Further along, rhododendron flowers in shades of pink and crimson brighten the path, while towering Silver Birch trees form an emerald tunnel. As elevation gains, scattered snowfields become increasingly common, heralding the approach to the renowned winter routes of Pangarchulla.

By noon, we reach the Khullara campsite, a serene oasis in the heart of the Himalayas. Nestled amidst blue pine, oak, and rhododendron trees, the campsite exudes a tranquil charm. Here, we are welcomed with a delicious lunch, a satisfying reward for our morning trek.

Khullara Meadows Acclimatization Trek

Later in the afternoon, a brief yet fulfilling acclimatization hike is scheduled to the Khullara meadows, lasting around 40 minutes. This excursion offers stunning wide-ranging vistas of the majestic Himalayan peaks, such as:

Kamet – The third tallest mountain in India, reaching a height of 7,756m.
Mana Parvat and Deoban – Provide breathtaking vistas of icy valleys and mountain ridges.
Hathi Parvat and Garud – Stand out with their unique silhouettes against the horizon.
Trishul and Dronagiri Peaks – Majestic summits that contribute to the overall grandeur of the Himalayas.

Khullara Top, a segment of the famed Lord Curzon's Trail, offers a stunning 360-degree view of the nearby mountains, creating an unforgettable visual experience.

Nighttime Calm & Story Sharing

At twilight, hikers return to the Khullara camping area for a tranquil night. The remaining hours are set aside for unwinding and getting used to the high altitude, preparing for the tough climb ahead. Relax in the peaceful atmosphere of the Himalayas, sit by a cozy campsite, and exchange tales with other hikers under a sky filled with numerous stars.

As we ascend, the importance of a restful night's sleep becomes increasingly clear. The challenges and the beauty of the journey ahead are on the horizon, and we are ready to embrace them.

Khullara Campsite (11000 ft.) - Khullara Top- Kuari Pass (12500 Ft.) and Back by Trek

The day begins early, a testament to the discipline and preparedness required for this adventure. A hearty breakfast fuels us for an invigorating 3-4 km trek (each way), taking approximately 5-6 hours. The trail ascends gradually through alpine meadows, interspersed with challenging steep sections that test endurance. However, the effort is rewarded with awe-inspiring panoramic views of Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Gauri Parbat, Neelkanth, and Chaukhamba, filling every step with renewed excitement.

Our experienced guides, who are local experts with extensive knowledge of the terrain and its challenges, and porters, who are adept at carrying heavy loads at high altitudes, will be present for those needing support throughout, ensuring safety and comfort as you navigate the terrain.

Reaching Khullara Top: A Crossroads of Himalayan Adventures

Upon reaching Khullara Top, trekkers are greeted with a stunning vista of the towering Himalayan peaks. From this vantage point, three distinct trails diverge:

One leads back to Tali,
Another ascends towards Pangarchulla,
The third continues toward Kuari Pass, our final goal.

After a brief rest to soak in the scenery and replenish energy, the journey continues toward Kuari Pass, navigating a path of inclines and narrow ridges.

Kuari Pass: The Doorway to Heaven

Reaching Kuari Pass is a moment of triumph—this magnificent location is often called the "Doorway to Heaven." With a 360-degree panorama of snow-draped peaks, it is truly one of the most picturesque spots on the trek.

Kuari Pass, with its historical significance, is a place where trekkers can follow in the footsteps of past explorers, including the famed British adventurer Lord Curzon. Standing at this iconic location, you'll gaze upon the pristine Himalayan expanse, feeling a deep connection to the region's rich history.

After absorbing the unparalleled beauty, capturing memorable photographs, and cherishing the moment, we begin our return descent to Khullara.

A Tranquil Evening at Khullara

The descent is relatively more straightforward, allowing trekkers to absorb the beauty from a fresh perspective. Upon returning to Khullara campsite, the remainder of the day is dedicated to rest, and light acclimatization walks in preparation for the high-altitude ascent to Pangarchulla Peak.

Since acclimatization is key to adjusting to higher altitudes, this break is essential to ensure a smooth journey. A nutritious dinner is served, followed by an early night's rest, helping the body prepare for the challenges and rewards of the next phase of the expedition.

Day 05 :

Eventually, we arrive at Tugasi Village, marking the conclusion of the trekking adventure. Scenic Drive Back to Joshimath

From Tugasi, we board the vehicle for a picturesque 2-3 hour drive to Joshimath. As the rugged mountain trails give way to winding roads, the journey offers a mix of nostalgia and comfort, with civilization gradually reappearing.

Upon arrival in Joshimath by late evening, a cozy guesthouse stay awaits, offering the indulgence of soft beds and warm blankets—a well-earned luxury after nights spent in the wilderness.

Over a hot, delicious dinner, we gather for a debriefing session, where trekkers can share their experiences, relive memorable moments, and celebrate their accomplishments.
